Frequently Asked Questions
Solana Beach Trash and Curbside Recyclables
Residential Automated
Cart Collection Program
Question #1 What should I do with my “old” trash cans and recycling crates? The greenwaste collection program will continue on its current collection system. You will need to continue to place your greenwaste into cans or bundles, as you always have. With this in mind, we recommend keeping enough cans on hand to handle your peak greenwaste demand weeks. If you wish to recycle any of your “old” cans or recycling crates there will be two options: 1st Option: During the weeks of 11/20-11/24 and 11/27-12/1 there will be rolloff boxes located at the Public Works Yard on Highland Avenue where residents can drop off unwanted cans or recycling crates. The Public Works Yard will be open from 7:00AM-11:00AM during the week of 11/20-11/24 and from 12:00-4:00PM during the week of 11/27-12/1. Additionally, on 11/25 (Saturday), the Public Works Yard will be available from 10:00AM-2:00PM. Please note that only old cans will be accepted, other items will not be accepted for disposal. 2nd Option: Place your unwanted cans or crates at the curb on the morning of Saturday, December 2nd, by 6:30 A.M. Waste Management will pick them up for you. All cans and crates will be recycled!
Question #2 Are the containers too large (or small) for my household? All residents will receive one 96- or 64-gallon gray cart for trash and one 96 or 64 gallon blue cart for recyclables. You should “size” your cart based on your “heaviest” volume weeks and months (when you have the most trash and recyclables) as opposed to your “lighter” weeks. Waste Management will switch out residents’ carts for a larger or smaller size at no charge for the first three months of the program (90 days after initial rollout), to ensure you have the size that is right for you. See instructions below at question # 4 for how to do this. “Extra” carts are available for either purchase or a monthly rental fee by contacting Waste Management at 1-800-386-7783.
Question #3 What should I do if all of my trash or recyclables won’t fit into the containers? If you are a large generator, we recommend you first make sure both of your carts are 96 gallon, either through your original delivery or by contacting Waste Management to switch to a 96-gallon cart. If you do have 96-gallon carts and you need additional containers, call Waste Management at 1-800-386-7783 to make arrangements to rent or buy extra carts.
Question #4 How do I get my 96- or 64-gallon cart switched out? If you determine you need either a larger or smaller cart, contact Waste Management’s customer service department at 1-800-386-7783 starting on November 20. Switch-outs of carts will begin on November 26, 2006. Switch-outs will be scheduled on your regular service day and will be scheduled in the order in which they are received. Depending upon the volume of requests received, it may take a few weeks to complete all switch-outs. We appreciate your patience during this process. Please be ready to tell the customer service representative what color (gray for trash or blue for recyclables) and size (96- or 64-gallons) you need switched out.
On the day of your cart switch-out, place your cart out at the curb as you normally would. You will not need to empty it or place an empty cart out for the switch-out – Waste Management will take care of any trash or recyclables in the carts when the carts are retrieved.
Question #5 Will trash or recyclables put out in non-Waste Management cans or plastic bags be picked up after the cart program is in place? No. The only exception is that greenwaste or yard waste must continue to be placed out in cans or bundles not exceeding 18” in diameter. Please do NOT put greenwaste in plastic bags. It will NOT be collected. All trash and recyclables MUST fit into the Waste Management provided carts with lids closed.
Question #6 How do I know what to put into my blue recyclables crate? You may refer to either the sticker found on the under side of the crate’s lid, or to the environmental programs brochure you recently received in the mail.
Question #7 How do I contact Waste Management if I have other questions? Waste Management’s customer service telephone number is 1-800-386-7783. The call center is open Monday-Friday from 7:00 A. M. to 5:00 P.M.
