Recycling

The City of Solana Beach has taken steps to increase the amount of material that is recycled every year and decrease the amount of waste that is sent to landfills. Local landfills are rapidly approaching capacity, and if something isn't done soon to prolong their useful lives, the region will be in a very dire situation. However, the City of Solana Beach is leading the way for the San Diego region in terms of recycling efforts and diversion rates. For example, the City recently transitioned from the old residential manual trash and source separated recycling collection to a new automated single stream commingled recycling collection process. This increased the amount of recycling by 45%, or 795 tons, the first year and the amount of trash headed to the landfill decreased by 650 tons. This will help to increase the life of local landfills.
The City has recently installed public recycling containers at City parks and beach accesses. Currently, there are over 25 dual trash/recycling containers located throughout the City, with more on the way.
Solana Beach has also recently implemented an extensive recycling program at the Public Works Yard. The City now recycles all asphalt, concrete, steel, metal, plastic, glass, aluminum, and green waste that are generated at City facilities and public construction and maintenance projects. The program has helped cut down on the waste produced by City facilities and operations. The overall (residential, commercial, industrial and municipal) City diversion rate has steadily increased over the last ten years as reported to the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB):
