Water Conservation
Yard maintenance can directly affect the quality of our local waters. Soil, dirt, leaves, and grass clippings that flow from your yard end up in creeks, lagoons, and oceans and can harm the health of the animals living in them, as well and the humans living around them. You can prevent water pollution by following these tips:
-Plant low water plants and natives
-When it's raining, turn your irrigation system off
-Change your scheduling for seasonal demand each month
-Apply the right amount of water to avoid runoff into the storm drains
-Use drip irrigation, soaker hoses, or micro-spray systems and water early in the morning
-Recycle or compost your yard waste
-Leave mulched grass clippings on the lawn to act as a natural fertilizer
-If you must use fertilizers and pesticides, follow the directions and use sparingly
Easy Ways to Save Water
-
Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks (8-18 gallons of water savings per minute)
-
Eliminate one irrigation cycle per week (up to 250 gallons of water savings per cycle)
-
Reduce each irrigation cycle by 1-3 minutes (15-25 gallons of water savings per minute)
-
Check to see if your toilet is leaking and fix it (30-50 gallons of water savings per day)
-
Turn off water between dishes when rinsing and when brushing teeth (2-3 gallons of water savings per minute)
